If you’ve ever dreamt of waking up in the wild and ending your day by the ocean — this is that trip.
From Kapama’s wild safaris and the Paul Kruger Gate infinity pool overlooking the jungle, to Shalati’s bridge view over the river, Umkumbe’s earthy magic, and Cape Town’s coastal calm, South Africa is a land of contrasts — and connection.
For us, it wasn’t just about spotting the Big Five. It was about the big moments: shared laughs, quiet awe, and the joy of discovering the world together.
We were just three on this journey: my husband, our almost-17-year-old son, and me. What began as a plan to “see wildlife” became something much deeper — a 12-day exploration of nature, luxury, and togetherness. Almost six nights in Kruger’s wild heart, and four in Cape Town’s coastal charm — a self-drive family adventure complemented by private guided safaris, offering the perfect balance of freedom and expert-led exploration.
Kruger National Park – Wild in Every Way
Our African story began deep in the bush — at the heartbeat of South Africa. Instead of staying in one place, we decided to sample four unique lodges across the Kruger region and nearby private reserves. Each offered its own rhythm, its own relationship with the wild.
We flew from Bengaluru to Johannesburg, picked up our rental car, and set off toward Kruger. The drive itself was an introduction to South Africa’s diverse landscapes — golden savannahs stretching into bushveld, occasionally interrupted by the curious glance of a giraffe or the grace of a herd of impalas. There’s a special feeling in driving yourself into the wild — it makes the journey as much about the road as the destination. Shalati, our first stop on the Sabie River, was like stepping into a dream.
Shalati – The Train on the Bridge

A Suspended Dream — Shalati is a reimagined luxury train set, permanently perched on a historic bridge above the Sabie River. On our first morning, mist lingered over the water as elephants & giraffes waded below our window. The lodge’s bridge-side design lets you watch hippos surface, crocodiles glide silently along the banks, and birds perform an endless ballet above the river. Mornings felt suspended in time; evenings were for quiet reflection, listening to the river’s pulse and the occasional distant call of wildlife.

It’s wild luxury at its finest: glass walls offering endless views, and the unmistakable hum of Africa just outside. Game drives delivered our first lion sighting — a regal male strolling down the road as if he owned it (which, in this realm, he did).
For our son, this was “the coolest hotel room ever”
Umkumbe Safari Lodge – Raw and Real

If the first two stays were about style, Umkumbe was about soul.
Located in Sabi Sands, this lodge offered simplicity that brought us closest to nature. Wooden decks overlooking a riverbed, elephants strolling by, and night sounds that lull you to sleep.
Our evening game drive gifted us a breathtaking moment — a leopard draped lazily across a tree branch, unbothered and beautiful. That sight alone justified the miles we’d driven.
Umkumbe was where we felt most connected — the Africa we had dreamt of.

Kruger Gate Hotel – The Gateway to the Wild

For our final three nights in the region, we stayed at Kruger Gate Hotel. Its location just outside the park made it easy to set out on early-morning self-drives.
Armed with snacks, a camera, and boundless curiosity, we explored Kruger at our own pace — pausing for zebras, elephants, and those rare leopard and rhino sightings that made us gasp. We even had the most unforgettable leopard encounter of our lives. I’m not posting any animal pictures here, as they deserve a separate blog to truly do justice to all the incredible moments we witnessed.
Afternoons were spent lounging by the pool and enjoying long, lazy lunches, followed by golden sunsets that set the bush ablaze with color. It was the perfect way to ease out of the wild before heading to the coast.

Kapama River Lodge – Safari Elegance

From vintage magic to refined comfort. Kapama River Lodge, set within its own private reserve, felt grand yet welcoming. Mornings meant hot coffee and cold mist, followed by game drives through golden light.

Here we heard our first lion roar — deep, echoing, primal. It rolled through the bush and through us. In the evenings, dinner under the stars, soft drums, and the scent of woodsmoke turned every meal into memory.
Cape Town – Where Mountains Meet the Sea
After days of khaki, dust, and adrenaline, Cape Town felt like a splash of color and calm. A short flight later, we were trading safari sounds for ocean waves.
We based ourselves near the V&A Waterfront — convenient, safe, and full of life. From here, every direction led to something unforgettable.
Table Mountain & City Vibes

A clear morning meant one thing — the Table Mountain cable car was running. The view from the top is impossible to describe — city, ocean, and mountains rolling endlessly.

The rest of the day we wandered the Waterfront, listening to street music, eating seafood, and watching seals play by the harbor.
Cape Point & Boulders Beach

This is a must. The Chapman’s Peak Drive is one of the most scenic coastal roads in the world — curves, cliffs, and ocean spray all the way to Cape Point.
We stopped at Boulders Beach to meet the famous penguins (our son declared them “too cool for their tuxedos”) and picnicked with the sea breeze in our hair.

Winelands & Countryside Charm
A day of indulgence and ease — wine tasting for us, chocolate pairing for the teen. The Stellenbosch and Franschhoek valleys are pure postcard beauty — rolling vineyards, oak-lined lanes, and warm hospitality.
Thanks to my uncle, we had the chance to visit Stellenbosch University, exploring his department before heading to lunch at a stunning vineyard.
Our lunch at Lanzerac Wine Estate, tucked beneath the branches of a fig tree and bathed in golden sunlight, felt like a perfect pause in time — a memory we’ll carry with us forever.
Slow Morning & Sunset Goodbye

Our last day was for slow living — a walk along Camps Bay Beach, coffee with a mountain view, and last-minute shopping at the Waterfront markets.
As the sun set over the Atlantic, we realized — this wasn’t just a vacation. It was a rediscovery of wonder.
This trip reminded us that the best adventures don’t rush — they unfold.
-
The wild gave us awe.
-
The road gave us freedom.
-
The family time gave us connection.
From lions at dawn to penguins by the sea, from roars to waves, South Africa showed us that contrasts create the most beautiful stories.
We still talk about the best leopard sighting we ever had around Lower Sabi. My son says Cape Town is the city he would like to settle in. For us, though, it was the quiet mornings and long drives — the moments between the moments that made it truly magical.
Expect a detailed blog on our wildlife encounters in Kruger coming soon. Until then, ciao!
